In this article, I'm gonna introduce lots of advice, practical tips and resources to help improve your pronunciation. After that, you can find yourself clearer and easy to make a step further. I'm going to tell you how to be better at pronunciation with 12 different and efficient ways. The fact is lots of students feel embarrassed about their pronunciation sometimes and people aren't like to understand what they are saying or what they are trying to express. If you ever feel embarrassed or had trouble with your pronunciation, this is the right place for you today!
Tip 1: Lips Tongue Throat, you must understand what they do and when they do Pronunciation is the very thing about what lips are doing, what tongues are doing as well as what the throat is doing. So one way to improve pronunciation is to know what is happening when you are speaking with these three body organisms. You have muscles in your face and you must get good at using them. You are supposed to notice which area is going on and what this area is doing. Here is an example beat boat when you pronounce 'beat', you would feel tense and spread with your lip. If you pronounce it correctly, there is at least a must to make a smile because the word forces your lip to do so. So does the word 'cheese'. you can feel that. Here is another word ' boat'. When saying this one, you would feel your lip is in a circle not like the case with 'beat'. So it's important to know what your lip is doing and these two show the exact differences between lip movements. Remember to think about what your lip is doing when you pronounce different words and different sounds. Let's talk about the tongue. Where your tongue locates when you speaking is really important. Pay attention to this precisely. Your tongue will appear in front of your mouth and at the back of your mouth as well as in the middle. Make your tongue in the right position is one of the keys to standardize your pronunciation. What about the throat? You might feel the movement of your throat sometime. That's exactly where we are now. Some words are pronounced without any vibration of your throat, the sound merely comes out from your mouth like simple words with syllable 'g' at beginning. For other words, the throat is forced to vibrate like those with syllable 'k'. You can touch your throat and feel. Throat plays a very important role in sounds, so it's not reasonable to lose your vibrating when you should do which probably causes misunderstanding. The most common case is when you are learning past tense, you will use your throat more. Listeners try to understand what you are expressing based on your tongue, also vibration.
Tip 2: Mirror as a friend You need to practice, not in the public. But where can you do it? No friends, no relatives, practicing is seemingly unrealistic. Now return home, find a mirror, stand by it and practice. It's good to look at mirror imagining a crowd of audiences before you and you can look at exactly what your lips are doing and your body movement which helps to reregulate your activities later on.
T ip 3: Record yourself Record yourself or film yourself when you are practicing. Why this matters? Most people don't immediately realize they are making mistakes when they are really saying something. After that, their mistakes disappear without any historic record losing a chance to re-correct themselves and leave the likelihood they would mistake again.
Tip 4: Learn International Phonetic alphabet Use your dictionary properly and professionally. A good dictionary teaches you how to spell words and pronounce them concisely. What is commonly used today is the international phonetic alphabet. I believe many language school starts their lessons with this course. Spelling doesn't tell you how to pronounce the word. In a few cases, you can deduce the pronunciation according to the spelling, but learning the International Phonetic alphabet is also a good choice.
Tips 5: Compare different sounds/words Some words have little difference in sounds. Oh, this is nightmare for somebody, probably including me! Pronouncing every word correctly won't cause troubles sometime. For example, 'sheet' and 'shit' are two apparently different words otherwise proximate in sounds. Use them carefully and you know why.
Tip 6: Pay attention to stress Stress means louder and longer in pronunciation. If you know where to put the stress in a word, you will make your pronunciation right–of course you should do–and fluctuant. Here is an example thirteen thirty 'teen' is longer and louder and 'thir' is shorter 'thir' is longer and louder and 'ty' is shorter You can tell the difference easily once you understand the importance of stress.
Tips 7: care about your intonation What is intonation? Intonation, in phonetics, the melodic pattern of an utterance. Intonation is primarily a matter of variation in the pitch level of the voice (see also tone), but in such languages as English, stress, and rhythm are also involved. Intonation conveys differences of expressive meaning (e.g., surprise, anger, wariness). It's like music. Take 'was it expensive?' as an example, your voice is supposed to go up and go down at the end. Different sentences have different intonations so that's really something to pay attention to.
Tip 8: Contraction Another thing that can really help to improve your pronunciation is contractions. Contraction means we shorten two words into pretty much one word with a apostrophe like 'I am' can be shorten into "I'm". Remember to use contraction anytime because it can save your time and polish your sound.
Tip 9: sing a song Go and find a song to learn and to sing out. try a song with slow pace, clear voice and simple words at beginning.
Tip 10: try tongue twisters You can give yourself an opportunity to try tongue twisters. It needs practice and time. Here is one example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked? You can have more tongue twisters from clicking read more.
Tip 11: Feedback from others If you have any friends who are native speakers of English or even just your friends are also learning English, you can go and ask them for help with your pronunciation. Get together and exchange feedbacks.
Tip 12: Websites There are some really great websites you can check out for pronunciation help. I collected many good websites which can be found in the history articles. Visit websites regularly and think about what you see, write down summaries and read them in future.
