  参考片段
For the next day and a half, they took turns climbing into the STS-400 centrifuge's capsule and going on simulated flights. At first, the ride gave us half the G's that would be experienced on SpaceShipTwo. Then we worked our way up to the full profile: 3.5 Gx and 3.5 Gz for blastoff, zero G in the middle, and then an elephant-sized push of 6 Gx on the way down.
The numbers don't really give you a sense of what it feels like. Bailey described it better after he took a few turns. "A roller coaster on steroids ... it's just like a huge roller coaster, but very intense. And actually a lot of fun," he said.
The ride was no big deal for one of Henwood's students, but he had an unfair advantage. The "student" was Todd Ericson, an Air Force test pilot. Ericson, who has been trained to handle 9 G's of acceleration, hammed it up when it was his turn.
The Gx part of the flight was weird in a different way: Although some have compared it to an elephant sitting on your chest, to me it felt as if an elephant was popping out of my chest, "Alien"-style.
The experience had a profound effect on Willan, who has been waiting nine years and counting for his spaceflight. The big-screen view of star-filled sky above and Earth below was merely computer-generated, but it still brought tears to his eyes.
  Passage 3:史前文明
  参考片段
In the early 1960s, the map of Physios was studied by the Massachusetts Technology Institute doctor Richard Strachan together with Hopgood. Both scientists concluded that Physios had really pictured the Antarctica shores free of ice. The shore counters and characteristic features of the relief are really close to the information about the covered with ice surface of the continent, which was mapped in 1958 by specialists from different countries.
Apropos, Gerard Cremer, known in the world as Mercator, also trusted the Orontes evidence. He included the Physios map into his atlas, where there were several Antarctica maps of Mercator himself. There is one interesting feature: in the Mercator map made in 1569, the west shore of South America is pictured less accurately, than in the earlier map of Mercator from 1538. The reasons of this contradiction are following: while working at the earlier map, the cartographer of 16th century proceeded from ancient sources which were not kept till our time, and while working at the later map, he proceeded from observations of first Spanish investigators of South America. The mistake of Gerard Mercator could be excused. In 16th century, there were no precise methods to measure longitude: as a rule, the error could have made hundreds of kilometers!
And, finally, Philippe Boiche, full member of French Academy of Science. In 1737, he published his map of Antarctica. Boiche presented the precise Antarctica picture of the time when the continent was free of ice. In his map, the under-ice topography of the continent is presented about which our civilization (which is supposed to be born not earlier than in fourth millennium B. C.) had no clear idea till 1958. Moreover, basing on now-lost sources, the French academician pictured in the middle of the South Pole continent a water space dividing it in two sub-continents which were situated to the west and to the east from the line, where now Trans-Antarctic Mountains are marked. According to the investigation in the framework of International Geophysical Year (1958), Antarctic which is pictured as one continent in up-to-date maps is in fact an archipelago of big islands covered with 1.5-kilometre ice.

  要求:
Human activities have negative effect on plants and animal species. Some people think that it is too late to do anything about this problem. Other people believe that effective measures can be taken to improve this situation. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
  【片段范文】
Gradually, the public is beginning to worry that the worse is yet to come. Some fear that if little or nothing is done in time to prevent the disaster from happening , humankind as species might be doomed as well. Such is at least the view held by quite a few scientists and environmentalists who call for severe sanctions, or else. Others, however, believe that the case is not hopeless. The good news is that there is an increasing awareness of the great danger human beings are in. An urgent global commitment has actually been reached to join forces to maintain ecosystem, saving Nature for Nature's sake, despite the fact that in certain crucial fields apparently not enough has been done. As it is, protecting the natural mechanisms and preventing pollution are hard tasks to deal with, nevertheless human beings ought to trust themselves in meeting the challenges, by reason or by force.
Excessive logging, illegal hunting and fishing, and out-of-control pollution continue in many corners of the planet on penalties of heavy fines and criminal charges, but concerned governments across the world are no longer turning a blind eye. It is a truth universally acknowledged that, unless effective measures are taken altogether at once, mankind's road to doom is sure, although very slow. Fortunately human beings now know that harming the earth is easy like pulling bricks from a giant wall, and that they may keep doing it until the wall suddenly collapses.
