In some countries, people waste a lot of food which is bought in shops and restaurants. What do you think are the reasons? What can be done to solve this problem?
The increasing seriousness of food wasting is drawing attention to this issue. In fact, this is especially common for people to toss away food they brought from shops or restaurants. The need of solving this problem goes undoubtedly, which makes it necessary to identify the root reasons.
The most simple and obvious reason to explain this rather troublesome situation would be “because we can”, due to not only the development in economy, but also the accompanying increasing tendency of being hypercritical about what one eat. In the past, when the lack of food was much more obvious and pressing, any behavior of wasting food, which is in fact unlikely to occur, would be strictly prohibited by people nearby-this can still be seen occasionally in China. However, with developing modern technology, the production and transportation of food has been greatly improved. And naturally, with growing availability, comes growing pickiness.
Before providing any reasonable and practical solution to this problem, one must first appreciate that it is actually people’ rights to discard anything that is rightfully theirs-we can never do anything righteous to stop people buying food; it would surely infuriate both the buyers and the sellers. But, there is something we can do after people eat: no matter people have the food eat in or take away, there would always be remains. And it would be much easier, fairer, and possible to control them. For example, a higher tax can be imposed upon people with too much left on their plate or in their dustbin, and that money can be put into researches about food distribution or food recycling, in hope to solve this technology-caused problem technologically.
